DIY Felt Animal Mobile

When I was pregnant with Samuel, I kind of obsessed over his nursery. In fact, being able to design another nursery was one of my first thoughts after finding out I was pregnant with him!

I initially wanted to do a woodland creatures theme, and found some really cute felt animal mobiles on Pinterest.

However, when we found out he was a boy, I decided I wanted to do something less gender neutral and more boy.

After many more hours scouring Pinterest for ideas, I decided on a blue and grey room, with elephants and chevron accents.

I still really liked the idea of the felt animal mobile though, and found some elephant ones I loved on Etsy. However, the prices were pretty scary!

So, I decided to try and make my own! I'm pretty happy with how it came out.

Do you need one for your nursery too? Here is a quick tutorial.

Materials needed:
-Felt
-Needle and thread
-Pins
-Cotton balls
-Hot glue gun
-Some sort of frame for the mobile (I was able to find an old mobile and remove parts, but you have many options here)

1. Decide which animal or animals you would like to make

I chose to keep it simple and only do elephants, but mixed it up by reversing the colours on two of them.

2. Find a shape to trace

I found a basic outline of an elephant online that went with the rest of my design through google images, and traced it directly from my laptop screen to a sheet of paper.

3. Cut out the shape, and trace that onto your felt

You'll need to cut out 2 sides for each animal. I got my felt - actually all of my supplies! - from the dollar store.

4. Put a couple of cotton balls inside your two halves and pin them together

5. Hand stitch the two sides together

Repeat the above steps for all of your animals. You could do more than four if you wanted, depending on what type of a base you're using

6. Add embellishments to your animals

I wanted to keep it simple, so I only added ears, using my hot glue gun. You could also add eyes or anything else you wanted. Hand stitching eyes or a mouth would be cute too!

7. Attach your animals to the base

I was able to score a mobile through a local freebies group on Facebook. I just removed the shapes and string that came with it (they were just basic plush circles) and attached my own string, tied to the elephants at the top. I like that my mobile is functional, and if you wanted to go this route I'm sure you could find a secondhand mobile somewhere and alter it. Otherwise you could simply attach a couple of pieces of dowel together and hang your mobile from the ceiling.

I also glued on a circular piece of felt and a cut out elephant at the top to cover a design that was on the mobile before.

I love how the mobile adds to the nursery and that I was able to give his room a personal touch!
